Oh childhood, how precious you are. Taken for granted so easily, it feels like it flies away in just a couple hours. Director Richard Linklater takes that phrase literally with his movie “Boyhood”, a film spanning over 10 years of production. Constant updates during that help formulate the story, and you have the story of both an acted out and literal story of growing up.

“Boyhood” stars Olivia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater, and Ethan Hawke as a split family dealing with struggling romances and work. Mason Jr., played by Coltrane, is the focus, and you see what is happening around him through his eyes. You live with him through elementary school all the way to getting accepted into college, and the difficulties he, and especially his mom, portrayed by Arquette, endures in between.

“Boyhood” was a phenomenal success, and grossed 11 times its budget of $4 million with over $44 million. The film was praised for its direction, depth and storytelling, earning it six Academy Award nominations, and winning one for Arquette’s supporting role. It won numerous other accolades for Linklater and his cast’s effort.

Childhood is a simple concept that is incredibly hard to capture so perfectly. But with Linklater’s direction, and a 12-year planning and filming process, “Boyhood” became an international success. More than a popcorn movie, watch this film whenever you have a chance, and you won’t be disappointed.
