The wrestling team’s season was highlighted by winning a City League title and having two Top 5 finishers at the state competition. The team won the City League meet Feb. 9 at North, with 13 of 14 wrestlers placing. Junior Brecken Phipps placed first in the 145 pound weight class, marking his third consecutive City League championship.

“No one expected me to win the match, so to prove a lot of people wrong felt great,” Phipps said.

At regionals Feb. 18 in Ark City, the team placed 11th. Senior Junior Steiner and freshman Bubba Wright placed second, juniors Joe Walter and Phipps and senior Brogan Klein placed seventh, and junior Ayden Jimenez and senior Charlie Frisch placed eighth. All seven qualified for state.

“As a team, I’m happy we qualified seven, but like any other person I would have loved it if everyone had qualified,” Steiner said. “But, I am happy with the City League title my team was able to achieve.”

At the state meet Feb. 22-23 at Hartman Arena, Wright took fourth at 106 pounds and Steiner placed fifth in the 113 pound division.

“It was something I was working for since freshman year,” Steiner said. “I went from winning one match on JV my freshman year to placing at state my senior year. The feeling on that podium was surreal and having my practice partner (Wright) also place was a bonus, showing how hard we both worked in the wrestling room.”

Phipps said the team finished out the season strong after a rocky start.

“I was worried about the team at the beginning of the season, but we had a lot of new guys step up, and over time they put the work in and we had an amazing year,” Phipps said.
