Two teams of KMC journalists competed against more than a dozen other high school teams in the Scholastic Press Corps competition at the Kansas State Fair Sept. 11.

The video team, comprised of seniors John Biehler and Lucy Vanderpool and juniors Joanie Korroch and Amy Pham created a 4-minute video featuring three stories. The agriculture story, the grand champion animals’ care, was assigned to them and they picked the Texas Trick Riders story out of a hat. The third story, the Sunflower dancers, was chosen by the team. The group had 10 hours to create the video on the fair grounds. Each member worked together to shoot footage, record interviews and edit the video. The winning team will be announced Oct. 4.

The print team, of seniors Hannah Harpel and Kaegan Cowan, juniors Lovette Mba, Isaac Caire and Korroch, created a four-page newsletter that contained four stories. The team’s assigned agriculture story was of the fair’s animal birthing center. The team picked the topic of marching bands out of the hat, and filled their free picks with a magician couple and a chainsaw artist. The group of five interviewed subjects, wrote stories, designed pages and took photos on site. The winners will be announced Oct. 4.
